That looks like a great quilt for a beginner to learn on. There's nothing super tricky, and you'll learn a lot. After a month or two, you'll probably know enough that you can move ahead with other blocks ahead of the posting schedule, if you want to do so.
My color advice for newbies is to make sure to include some truly dark fabrics. Many beginners end up with a lot of medium fabrics that all are lovely on their own, but when you put them next to each other and then look at them from a distance, sort of mush together, as they don't have enough light/dark contrast between them. Taking a black and white photo of them is a good way to see how much light/dark contrast there is. I like Jinny Beyer's advice to include a "dark with texture, that looks solid at a distance" in each block. Here's a sample of a dark blue that I've used and liked a lot. Dark/pine green and dark purples are really nice.
Be prepared to make some mistakes along the way, and don't beat yourself up about them. Angela Walters often says "finished is better than perfect". When you're looking at something in your hands, inches from your face, you can see very small imperfections. When the whole quilt is put together, those imperfections disappear. Advanced tip: when you show quilt to others (whether the whole or just individual blocks), don't point out the things you see as mistakes. Just let them enjoy seeing what you've made.

Watson's advice to pick a border that you love and that draw colors from it is really good. You can see that sample shown on the blog has a border that has the colors of the quilt. I like how the sample uses both the light blue and the yellow of the sashing in some of the blocks; it really helps the whole quilt look very coherent.

Thanks for posting! It looks like a fun quilt for beginners or experienced quilters. I love the tips already posted and always learn something new from these QAL projects. Enjoy the process of fabric selections.

She really is! A few years ago, she did a trunk show for a guild I belong to. It was really interesting. She also taught a class. Just a delightful person. My quilt is in our FL home, which we cannot go to this year due to storm damage, and I never took a picture!

this is the dedicated thread.
just make sure nobody copies any of the directions into posts here. i had to delete the image of the quilt that was copied from the originating site.
i had to hunt for the place you can post comments at the BOM blog site. i assume there's some sort of sign up required in order to post.

you may also comment here, in this thread, and post photos of your progress. i don't know if you can add images to your text comments at the BOM blog.

I went ahead and pulled the fabrics and have them in a project bag ready for January. I pretty much stuck to her colours except I added purple. The border fabric I chose has purple in it so will sub it instead of dark blue in at least two blocks, maybe three. The aqua I have is more teal but I didn't have enough of a lighter one and I am pulling 100% from stash. If anyone has suggestions about the colour choices, I hope you will chime in.
