Do any of you have this ruler Deluxe Corner Trimmer and Hand piecing Aid by Marti Mitchell AND do you find it useful? It has holes and I thought it would help me mark the points or dots. for Y seams easier. That is what I would use it for.

I use to have one like that and another one that looked like, either Jenny Beyer or Fons and Porter one. Someone told me they looked like torture devices. LOL I never used them so gave them to another quilter. I took a great class on how to sew y seams. Don't sew up to 1/4" sew up to 1/2". It sure makes it easier especially machine sewing them.

It's not hard to make one out of thin card board or clear plastic from a takeout container's lid. Try it out and see if it is helpful to you. If it is helpful, and you'll be using a LOT a purchased one made out of durable plastic may be worth it to you.
I've done Y-seams a few times, and I've just marked a line 1/4" over from the edges of the fabric for the last inch, on each piece of fabric involved. Where the lines intersect is where you want to stop sewing. (See this video at 0:37 for a nice illustration of the lines intersecting.)

In the meantime, I found a YouTube video and am making my 8 point stars a different way with no Y seams.
Thanks everyone for your input. I think I’ll hold off buying a ruler for now. The 8 point Star I just made called for a special ruler. However I just used my 45 degree line on my rulers and came out perfect. I have 9 more stars to make before I can sew all the blocks together and show you. Of course it’s another Quilt of Valor-(smile)
