Any ideas on a lap quilt?

My husband's Pain Management Doctor is retiring at the end of April. She has breast cancer and wants to slow down and enjoy the time she has left. We didn't pry into her illness, it wasn't our place to ask such personal questions. On our way home we were still in shock, talked about giving her a gift for all she has done for us and let her know we care for her. So we decided that I make her a lap quilt (my husband loves my creative works) to curl up with on the sofa with.
Here is what I have to work with...
Before I sold my AqquQuilt system I took a ton of my oddly cut fabrics and made rectangles, 3" and 4" squares I have a few triangles in there too. All different types of fabric flannel cotton denim. I am leaning towards a scrappy type quilt with all the shapes incorporated.
What do y'all think? I value all your opinions very much so shout the ideas out!

I am sure you will make a wonderful quilt for your doctor friend. I can't imagine this combination of fabrics together. But, that doesn't mean it won't be wonderful. You have something in your mind's eye for the design, so go for it! Much of the happiness of getting a quilt is that someone took the time to sew just for you with love in their heart.

Maybe piece the rectangles and squares and do raw edge with the triangles scattered across the quilt top?
I agree with the Minky or Fireside on the back.
She will love it and you are a darling for thinking of it.

Here is a pattern I made for the lady down our street who was going through cancer treatments. It's lap quilt. It appeared in Quilt maker magazine and also Quilting Daily. The name is Rudeneja. The Quilt Maker article shows in several sizes. All of the squares are cut into 2 7/8 by 2 7/8. Oh by the way the word Rudeneja is Lithuanian for autumn weather.. The QM article was printed in Sept/Oct of 2015 #165. I don't have a date on the Quilting Daily article.
I hope this helps. Of course you could change it to fit what you need, but maybe it will inspire you too.

I suggest something soft and feminine. I would not include denim in this one. I have no suggestions for a pattern but I will comment that I have a friend who has had breast surgery. She was very firm in stating she didn't want anything with the pink ribbon on it. She had a reminder every time she looked in the mirror and that was more than enough for her.

I understand the urge to make her a quilt, but if you don’t have any information about her situation, you might be assuming it’s worse than it is.
When you said “the time she has left,” I thought she was terminally ill, but maybe she’s not even going to need chemo.
Just trying to help reduce your stress a bit, so you can concentrate on how much she’s going to love the quilt. 🙂

She didn't state how long she had left, she did tell us she is dying. And that she wants to slow down and enjoy life.
Funny thing is this is the first Doctor my husband has been truly comfortable with in a long time. And she understands this, that is why she is making an effort to find a replacement for him within the office.
