Another reason for batting is to prevent feeling the inside seam allowances.

My Godmother made quilts for my children.. pieced front, flannel back and no batting. They draped nicely around the children and they were my all time favorites. For bigger quilts, I would use flannel as a batting.

some of my bedrunner quilts we use as a throwover on cold nights are unbatted (all double sided)
The king size quilts I made for our travel RV are both unbatted as tempratures vary wildly on the road, sometimes one is enough, sometimes both, but the extra takes a LOT lest space when folded and put away.

I quilted the small ones, the Kings (double sided) were longarmed, my longarmers have never once said they wouldn't quilt something I've brought them. They came out beautifully, and the quilting defination does still show.

I've batted a couple of bed runners with flannel and I found them to feel heavier than using batting.

I made one of the grands a quilt this last Christmas and just FORGOT to add the batting. I was pretty sad about it. My husband said he thinks some quilts are too heavy anyway and the grandkid love it because he can totally wrap himself up in like a cocoon! So it worked out ok.

I did use a thinner fleece pre bought blanket on the back.

I made a throw for my mom (which I got back after she passed and now use daily), then later made one each for my three sisters - all with Kaffe Fassett fabrics and no batting. They are pieced fronts, backs are just 44" fabric pieced with one seam. I tied them instead of quilting. But after issues of the fabric not laying right around the edges after doing the envelope method on the first (Mom) one, I did binding on the other three, just like I would a regular quilt. They all LOVE them and use them as a daily throw in their living rooms. They are just the right weight for a light cover without being too hot (we are of a certain age, lol). Everything is cotton and breathes -and drapes and wraps around you - oh so scrumptiously. They are so soft! (not sure how to add pic on this site, I never have, or I would show you!). I saw go for it on one and see if you like it - I bet you will!
