Unfortunately this week has been a slow sewing week. I took advantage of the nicer weather and took the little ones out of the house on walks around town and then to a nature museum this week. I have to teach the twins to behave better in public, (they both had a complete meltdown in the museum ... at the same time!) but it's not their fault. I haven't taken them out much at all this past winter! Time to fix that and start with weekly outings!

Do any of you have experience with sewing satin? Our oldest daughter is getting Confirmed in May and I want to make her a special dress for the big day. I bought some satin, bridal lining fabric, lace for a skirt overlay and a pattern off Etsy. Do I need to prewash satin? What type and size needle should I use? What stitch length? I would appreciate any tips!

NZ, with satin you need to finish all edges as it ravels pretty bad. Also, most satin is not washable (unless it's polyester). It usually has to be dry cleaned. When you press it, always use a pressing cloth and much lower heat setting. And press from the wrong side of the fabric.

I'd use an 80 (12) needle and #2 stitch length.

I used to be a costumer for the ballet! Your dress plans sound wonderful.

H4B outstanding blocks, love your color choices.

TG love all 4 of your blocks the orange gold just pops

Susie Q love love my block so much. The rest of your blocks are beauties

NZ, your dress pattern sounds awesome. It has been so many years since I sewed with satin I would be of no good to you

Thx for the prayers and thoughts for my dd. I am a very worried Mom, so many things can go wrong and she will be devastated if she doesn’t get Troy across the finish line. I know it’s this huge honor for Troy to have picked her and it means the world to her but yikes on not choosing a male for this task. Now that statement would send Kel through the roof but it’s how I feeln

I like the new avatar, Gram E. May I assume you also make dolls too? A woman of many talents. When my Grands lived in Nobelsville, I used to drive down 31 which would have put me near you. Small world. The kiddos are now in college, Purdue and Ball State and I don't see them as often as I would like.

Cute dollies! Did you make them, GramE? I love how you did their hair.

I just got finished putting my second Boom 31 quilt together. I love it. And the first one... I'll get them quilted and then take some pics. It's so satisfying to transform a stack of blocks into a top. You all did such nice blocks for these!

I did. I had to take a break from the sewing machine for a while and I also needed to stay sane, so I switched to small toys and dolls for my 2 great granddaughters. I can crochet in a recliner so I have been investing in yarn instead of fabrics.

I thought I should change the picture because Jolene is 4 1/2 now. I need to get an update. But she’s kinda camera shy.
Those college years take a toll on grandma visits. They suddenly have new best friends. I think mine are all done with college and the ones who joined the Navy, the AirForce, Army and Coastguard are mostly relocated in new cities. Out of 8 grandsons, 5 joined the military. I do have one that lives across the street with his wife and 2 children. I love that! And I’m only about a mile and a half off of Hwy 31.

I am so enjoying this boom as it has been a couple of years since I’ve sewn much of anything. I love looking through the patterns trying to imagine if I could put them together. I have so much fabric to comb through for things to match. I love seeing the blocks everyone is creating for me!
