Back in the old days, muslin was a typical back and yes, I have used both top and back. I don't worry so much about the weaves of my cotton fabrics (muslin is a plain weave, threads are basically the same both directions), more about the weight of the fabric. If you like the weight and the drape, go ahead!

I pieced the after quilt backing on a quilt I am currently working with muslin. I am a prewasher and after a wash and dry as I pieced the back and am now attaching it to the front, it doesn’t look or feel distinctly different from the other fabrics in the quilt.

In my experience, even "pre-shrunk" muslin shrinks after being soaked in hot water.

Even JoAnn legacy muslin - which is a very nice muslin.

I use muslin all the time for both top and backing. My favourite is Marshall Dry Goods pre shrunk perma-press which is the same weight and quality as Roc Lon, unfortunately now discontinued.

Bleached muslin is a good addition. Also use muslin for the foundation in string piecing.

Oh yes, I have also used muslin as foundation for backing hand appliqué to reduce puckering or to back embroidery or thinner vintage linens I wanted to add to a quilt top that didn’t appear up to the task on their own.

So far I've only used muslin for practice pieces. Either trying out new stitches or stitch length, or making sure my meanders are o.k. before the actual quilting.

Some of my fabrics are reproduction civil war and they lend themselves to using muslin for the piecing and the back. I would not consider using muslin with my batiks however. I think those two fabrics would scream at each other LOL.

I've used muslin as a backing as well as a background fabric. If it's a good quality, I wouldn't think you'd have any problems using it.
