Gal who gave me a sewing machine lesson ...user error on my part. Didn't need the lesson...lol...said 40 weight.
Called the same store today and different gal said 50 weight!
So, what do you use when QUILTING on your domestic machine...NOT a long arm

I use any size that has the color I want. The thread type doesn't matter that much as long as it's quality thread. The needle size is what is important to sew with few thread problems. Most of the time I use the same wt in the bobbin but maybe a different color. Don't get caught up in the 'right' thread to use. Remember all the hype for this thread or that comes from the ones that profit someway to promote the brand.

me too. I even use serger thread for FMQ. I went to a presentation years ago by someone from a thread company and he demo'd threads and said use the thread that works in your machine and gives the result you want. Even other than his brand

For most projects I use-50 weight Aurifil thread can be used for machine piecing, hand piecing, machine applique, hand needle turned applique, fine needlework, foundation piecing, miniature patchwork, detailed quilting, bobbin lace making, and machine embroidery1. It is a 2-ply thread that comes in small, large, and cone sizes in 270 colors2. It is recommended for sewing bags, toys or dolls, garments, or when a more defined topstitching or quilting pattern is desired3

40 is heavy and could be used for hand quilting.

For my longarm I use signature poly/cotton or a polyester embroidery thread.

If I do quilt on my domestic machine, I use Aurifil or Signature cotton.

When I was using my friend's long arm, we were getting our best results from So Fine prewound bobbins and I became a fan. Then I won an auction thing for a huge lot of Sew Fine cones. I use it almost all the time now for my bobbin thread, piecing and quilting. I've also been using it for domestic quilting, or at least when Cranky Bernie (the bernina) was working, it like So Fine and Aurifil threads.

I don't think I was clear -- I am using So Fine, top and bottom, most of the time in my domestic machine for both piecing and quilting. But back in the day I used just Dual Duty the same way. Mostly this auction was a LOT of thread, I figure at least 10 years worth of mostly full cones still in their wrappings... I don't remember exactly -- something like 30+ cones, regular "normal" colors plus variegated plus more, it was a steal at $100ish.

(and still working at getting it set up, but I'm hoping my new to me long arm likes it in both places too!)

I have in my stash, Sew Fine, Bottom Line, , Aurifil, Omni, Wonderfill, Masterpiece, Glide, Pima, Quilters Select, Isocord, Sew Sassy, Sew Complete, Essential Pro, Mara 120, Gutterman, YLI, and probably a few other brands. Like I said I choose the thead I use for quilting by color. There are a few brands I want to try but with my stash that has built up over the years I only buy thread when on a great sale. 50 wt Aurifil 2 ply uses a different needle size than 50 wt Superior Pima 2 ply with my machine, a Juki TL . I keep a chart of each needle size/type that I have used with no problem with what thread. I need to use all my thread and then, if ever used it all, only buy one brand.

I use Glide 40wt thread. Started using it for just quilting and now use it for both piecing and quilting. I use the prewound bobbins when quilting on my Cutie frame with my Juki TL2010 but wind my own bobbins when piecing on my Pfaff.

I use the same thread throughout the quilt. From piecing to quilting to binding. I use Connecting Thread's Essential Thread and buy it in the 5000 yard cones. I use basic colors, so what they have in the cones works for me color wise. It is 50 weight and 100% cotton.

That goes for the actual quilting as well as the piecing.
Some will tell you to never use polyester on a quilt. Others only cotton.
While others say, Whatever works for you!

Some have thread stashes offering them lots of choices!
