How do you Gather Your Binding?
#31
My idea worked great! I used a miter box to hold fabric, which was folded back and forth. Then, I threaded it through a thread holder meant for cones. It fed perfectly and hassle-free. Thanks for all the ideas!

I use a binding doll on the spindle made for it. From Doohikey Designs. However I wonder if they are going out of business as their stock seems to be almost non-existent. I bought mine from Missouri Star a long time ago.... binding babies.

The binding maker made me realize that people gather their binding differently. Personally, I am pretty new to binding because I used to self bind my quilts by extending the top and folding to back. Now, I just throw it over my shoulder and feed as I go. How do you gather your binding?

It is basically, after you make the binding for on the quilt, what do you do with it before or as you are putting it on your quilt.
As in:
Do you let the length of it lay on the floor while you are sewing it on, or do you fold it up a certain way, or do you feed it out of a box while you are putting it on, or perhaps store it a certain way until you need it? Or, do you just keep it in a jumbled pile while you put it on or store it?
No worries, it also took me a minute to figure out what the title of the tread meant as well.

I vaguely remember seeing a video of "wearing" the binding. You roll the binding onto a cardboard tp core. Pass a length of string, yarn, ribbon, chain, etc. through the center of the to tube, making sure it is long enough to go over your head. Unroll binding as you sew.

I wasn't searching for this but just came across a Rob Appell video ( think a new one) about binding. He winds the binding around an empty spool then puts the spool on a spool holder (the free-standing kind you might buy as an accessory to a machine). Sets the spool holder next to the machine, and away you go! Looks like a good idea for both storing the binding and feeding as you sew. Apologies if this idea already got mentioned in the thread.

I do it similarly.... I fold the binding accordian style in a basket and put it at my feet as I feed onto the quilt back. Tried winding it around a large spool and a piece of cardboard but I found it flipped all over the place as it unrolled.
