I also agree as I have quite a few colors in the Aurifil brand and my quilt machine does not like it, and yes, it broke continually so now I'll only use it as a bobbin thread or piecing thread. I remember using my cream colors years ago and didn't have issues but I think the colors might be weaker. My machine loves the cheaper Connecting Threads cotton and polyester threads best. I've also used my metallic embroidery threads on my machine and I have to say it works better on my quilt machine than my embroidery machine....GO FIGURE!!!!!

So being more expensive doesn't always mean a better thread.

My quilting friend has always used Gutterman thread for her quilt sewing projects. She purchased a new machine and it simply doesn’t sew well using the Gutterman but does well well with both Aurifil and Coates and Clark. So I agree that being expensive doesn’t make it a better thread. My local quilt shop carries Aruifil so that’s what I use now because I don’t want to order it online and I like the thread and have had no issues with it. Plus as I said in a previous post, it is less linty than CC, my only other local source. Sew with whatever works for you and your machine.

The shop where I bought my Bernina (Mennonite owned) carries Gutterman and Metler, as does the shop where I buy fabric (also Mennonite owned) - so those were what I used for many years. After trying a spool of Aurifil I had been given, I was shocked at how much less lint there was, both around the spool holder and in the needle area. It was enough to convince me to change.

This thread aroused my curiosity, so I went to my threads and pulled out several spools. Aurifil, Gutterman, Mettler, Missouri Star and something else I've already forgotten the name of. Only all cotton ones, nothing with a poly core. All broke pretty easily.

Unless I need a special color, I buy Aurifil cones (white, black and light gray). For piecing, I don't worry about color a whole lot, especially after taking a class with a teacher who only uses black and white. She pointed out that for years, that was all that was widely available, regardless of what was being sewn. Anyhow - I buy those cones for $39 when on sale; it's 6,400 yards (the large spool is 1,422 yards). A pretty good deal, IMO.

I have a lot of trouble with Aurifil curling back towards the machine needle after cutting.

Onebyone.... Omni will do the same thing. I have to pull and extra length of thread to get it to go behind the needle/pressure foot area.

I would not piece with Aurifil for that reason. It does come in lots of nice colors, and I will use it for applique because of the color selection. For piecing, my preferred is Superior Threads Masterpiece, which is a 3-ply. Aurifil is only a 2-ply thread. I used to buy Gutermann by mail from JoAnn, but don't know where to get it now. I'll often wind my bobbins with Gutermann. Presencia 50 wt is good for binding, but too thick for piecing, I use the 60 wt. for piecing.

The worst for seam ripping is Glide. I use it exclusively on my Juki and love it but what a time when you have to unsew it. It's poly.
I use Aurifil on my Bernina and haven't had any issues.

I use all kind of threads because my machine isn't fussy at all. I do use auriful for piecing sometimes but also use coats and clark and anything handy. I even do FMQ with serger cones and get a good result. One time a while ago the guild I was in had a YLI thread rep and he said use whatever thread your machine likes and gets you the result you like. I find wonderfil the lintiest of threads that I use, but of course this probably doesn't happen to everyone.

Nobody sold Aurifil near me when I first started quilting, so I haven't bought any. If I see a color I like sometime I'll give it a go, but I'm pretty happy with Superior Threads & Gutermann for my needs.

You can get Gutermann in many weights and types on-line from Wawak. The retail Sew-All is exactly the same as Mara 100, but the colors have different names and you can get larger spools. Here is their Gutermann page: https://www.wawak.com/thread/thread-by-brand/gutermann/

I really like Wawak and get a lot of my supplies there. It's more focused on the garment industry, but of course we use so much of the same tools-- and then I can shop local when I can for the quilt-specific stuff.
