black-eyed peas

I am fixin to start my peas for the New Year. I am going to cook them in chicken stock in the crock pot. Also, need some uvas (grapes) for good luck! This is a tradition shared with me by my Mexican heritage students.

I bought my blackeye peas yesterday. I decided to use frozen instead of dried. We had Christmas at my son's so I'm hosting New Years. I'm going to make a pan of cornbread, of course, and slaw. For dessert I'm making an apple/cranberry dessert. I got the recipe years ago on Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson. Hope everybody has a happy and safe New Years!

There are other Southern food traditions that go along with the peas but usually I cook only the peas. I have had black eye peas every new year I can remember and so far, my luck has been very good. I see no reason to question it. LOL The stores here practically give away a package of black eye peas for New Years.

I don't really have a food tradition for New Years, but I do have some rice (which is a big treat in my low carb life), and I was able to find a can of black eyed peas... had to look for them (they weren't in with the beans) and didn't see any dried or frozen options.
I'm just going to cook up the rice with the peas and I'll throw in a can of tomatoes, I know not traditional... we still have a bunch of sausage to use instead of ham.
I also do "long noodles for long life" for the lunar new year, which is February 17 in 2026. I figure anytime after the first counts

We haven't gone out for New Year celebrations for years. In fact, most years we don't even make it to midnight! Our tradition is smoked salmon with a thinly sliced baguette, cream cheese, capers, sweet onion, a green salad and a nice bottle of white wine. I forgot to pick up the Prosecco so the white wine will have to do.
