Since the block size doesn't fit into the border unit size, the number blocks and spacing border are difficult to adjust. So to make the quilt larger, another border is working well. And the flying geese will become hearts.

I did the borders "Border Workbook" style. I completed the quilt, measured its inner size, then completed the borders, measured their size, and then cut coping strips of the precise size to make the borders fit onto the inner part. What can I say, I knew I probably hadn't done a perfect job throughout with my measurements and sure enough, my strips for the ice blue inner border had to be cut at 1.25" instead of 1.5" as Bonnie said in her instructions.

I forgot to take a picture of the whole thing when I got it laid out, but I'll post a picture of a corner in a minute.

This is one of the bigger quilts I've made and I'm kind of dreading sandwiching and quilting it, so I'm playing the avoidance game and putting away all the extra fabric and such first, but I do have the back made, label on (I put my labels on the back before quilting just so they'll be extra-incorporated!), batting trimmed, and even the binding strips cut and ready, sooo... I'm ready to put it all together once I take a deep breath and make the sandwich!

I'm putting on my second border. I think this indigo fabric I'm using is the worst frayer I've ever worked with!

It looks gorgeous, Quossom! Bonnie's mysteries are always a challenge, at least to me. Congratulations on accepting the challenge and making a terrific quilt. That's a good idea about attaching the label before quilting. I know I've heard about this before, but I think it's time for me to incorporate that trick into my next quilt. It would make me take care of this task and not leave it for years later!

You go Quossom! I really love how your colors came out to make the strong chains around the stars. Hope you did enjoy the experience, or at least have no more (real) fears about a mystery project.

I did get my goose unit borders done and once I had enough coffee and a pen and paper, found out the math wasn't scary at all. I do have to measure my actual top and pieces, to see how close I am. I added 3 goose units (4x3=12) for my extra 10" block, but it still worked out with the width of the inner border correctly. Some times math doesn't seem right to me, but graph paper usually works..

I still need to make my 4 corner squares, I'm using fabrics I missed before which helps that I don't have to worry about fabrics touching.

And I leave on Saturday for another visit with Barb! but I'll be checking in hoping for more finishes and progress shots

I'm still doubting my math and graph paper, but I did measure my completed top. My seams were consistently scant and I'm almost 2" bigger than design. But once I layout my borders, they fit very nicely with my inner section. It's all going to work out just fine, and even if I have to fit in a bit, over 70 inches it won't be noticeable and it will quilt out just fine as well. Since I will be the quilter, I won't get upset

I'm going to stay stitch the outer edges, including the quilt top pre-border with all those little seams, and have the outer edges of the border all stitched before putting on the top. So much easier to do as a strip than once it is all on, you can always go back over the corners if you want.
