Default Liner to hide wool batting color?

I am considering using wool batting in my not-yet-finished quilt. The quilt has a soft white background fabric (white, but not optic white or bright white). The wool batting I'm thinking about using is Quilters Dream Wool batting, which is a natural wool color, not bleached.

I don't want the wool's color to give a "shadow" to the quilt's background fabric. I have looked at lightweight muslin, but even that is $8 and up a yard online! I used to like JoAnn Fabrics' basic white muslin, but of course they are no longer in business.

Has anyone else needed to use a liner when using wool batting? What would you recommend as a liner for wool?

Thanks for sharing your valuable experience!

Do you have any old, white sheets that you can spare?

I hear you - I always aim to use a white batting when there is a lot of white in the quilt. Have you checked this site? They purchased most of the boundless fabric and sell it at $5 a yard. I have purchased multiple items from them and have been very pleased - my only thought is boundless fabric is a bit on the thicker side

Another option might be a 108 from Marshal Dry Goods ..... and it is at a great price point

Unless your white fabric is a light weight cotton, I don't think you have a problem. You've already noted that your white is soft white, so I think your neutral wool batt would not create a problem. Adding an extra layer as you have suggested may create worse problems, if the fabric should bunch up in the layers.

Here's my experience ... I used it with my embroidered snowman quilt ... the blocks are a pure white with variegated blue embroidery. To me, there is no shadowing or colour distortion and the white still reads as totally white.

If you want to check things ... you could always do a trial sandwich with the same fabrics as in your quilt.

I agree with QuiltE. Try a trial quilt sandwich, but I don't think there will be any problem with shadowing.

Me, three on doing a sample sandwich. It's the most sure way to know if you even need a liner. I would definitely do this before I messed with another layer of fabric on my quilt. You most likely won't even need the liner

I use a layer of Quilters Dream Request white cotton batting on top of wool (QD wool is wonderful) or natural (unbleached -- I use Warm and Natural) cotton batting for white quilts. It's the thinnest white batting I could find, and I found a layer of batting to be a bit easier to work with than a layer of fabric. And it does a good job of eliminating the seam shadowing that sometimes appears when the batting isn't as white as the fabric.

I like the idea of using the Quilters Dream request on top of their QD wool. Years ago it was much whiter. They deny that they changed anything and said the all wool is different in color. I don’t believe that excuse. I do know that I once noticed the QD wool batting ina store that was store near fluorescent lights on a top shelf was very yellow.

I am hand quilting an Ocean’s Wave lap quilt and I used wool and am not happy with the white. Very noticeable to me. I am stitching in the ditch and when I am done, I’m thinking about going back and quilting thin lines in the white areas. Hopefully that will help. I will try the QD Request on the next non-hand quilting quilt. Thanks for the suggestion.
