UFO Challenge 2026
#181
April 2026
Haven't been here in some time.
I did a UFO challenge some years ago. I had 37..... which both scared and amazed me.. But I waited until the new year and started with a list of all of them.. My goal was to get the all finished, which I did. However those pesky UFO's started showing up again a couple of years later... NOW I try to get things done in a more timely manner.
In very late 2025 I started sewing all my cut pieces into blocks. 2.5", 3.5" 5" etc. I made HST, QST, 4 patch blocks. etc.
Today, 4-9-2026 I have most sewn into blocks and pressed ready to make into quilts. Now all I have to do is pick a pattern and start sewing from the "large clear plastic bins" which hold each size separately. And I separated out all the QOV (Quilts of Valor) pieces as well. Life is good.. UFO challenges are good thing.

Welcome, tuckyquilter. Show us your finished as they emerge. it is always encouragement to us. I agree that UFOs do seem to reappear and sneak in after we have done our best to send them out the door. I am hoping to get my list finished and have minimal for next year and to then....just keep up so they don't overwhelm me again. Glad you joined us.

I have started on my second UFO. I realized that I needed a quilt to learn the free motion quilting table setup on before I jumped into the one Im giving to my friend. I dug through the charity quilt topper rack and found this little Americana quilt that is not my style and id pieced very simply (the flags and houses are arranged panels) so if it goes horribly I won't feel too bad and I have a reason to be excited about finishing it. I got it glue basted and ready to go.

I did it.... I caught up with the Challenges. The quilt below is UFO #2 an unfinished mystery quilt from 2019. I was given to me to finish because the quilter has serious arthritis in her hands and can not longer quilt. The top was about 2/3 finished and has been sitting in my UFO basket since 2022. Now it is done and ready to go "out the door."
I have a couple more of hers on my list but they will wait until later in the year.
I have started working on another UFO but doubt it will be finished this month.
I have other things I would like to work on for a little while.

Such a pretty quilt WMUTeach! The original starter should be very pleased.
With nicer weather, I am finding it more difficult to stay on task with my quilting. I have my next UFO layered and ready for quilting and just can't seem to get myself talked into getting started on quilting. I even wound the bobbin and threaded the LA thinking that would encourage me to get going. NOPE. Not even a smidge interested. And it's a quilt I like and plan to keep for myself. Made the top in 2013.

GREAT FINISHES, WMUTeach and Cedar! You two have inspired me once again!
At almost midway through the month, im not sure how successful i will be in getting a UFO done 🥺 but its still my goal. I kinda got sidetracked with a Prayer Journal and a Bible cover that popped up needing to be done for gifts. The Prayer Journal is done but the Bible cover i just started. Im using some leftover kaleidoscope blocks from last months UFO that i finally finished.
BUT, because these two projects needed to be slipped in there, i havent even decided what my actual UFO is supposed to be for this month. Im not gonna beat myself up about it and there is still a little time for me to pick/start a UFO as long as the Bible cover doesnt take me too long.
WMUTeach… i really love that pattern - i dont believe i have ever seen it before? And the two-color scheme seems perfect for it. Is the person you finished it for still around to see it done?
Cedar… i dont always love stuff started by others, but it will be a finish that you will be proud of! Boy, did i nod my head when you talked about that sometimes its just hard to get started. Sometimes its for a reason - sometimes i dont know why. Sometimes i just lose my MOJO for a while and just gotta wait till i get it back.

AprilM, the original quilter is indeed around, in fact she lives about 3 miles from me. She gave me her unfinished pieces to finish and to give away. I will send her a photo, but will be donating the quilt to Project Linus or to a hospice center that uses quilts on their beds just to make the space less sterile and hospital in appearance. I will look to see if I have the name of the original patterns. My group leader broke it down into monthly bits to be completed as a mystery quilt.
