I have finished the squares for my quilt but they are not perfect in size. Some are a little small and some are a little large. Is there any way to add sashing and then square the up? I'm a self starter and some of these squares were made years ago. I was thinking I could do a small border around each square and then square them up and then join with sashing. HELP!!!!

Sashing could be used to square up your squares. Just make the sashing large enough to make your smallest square the size you want and then add to all squares and trim back down to your wanted size. The narrower your sashing pieces are, the more likely that you will notice a difference in the size of it when all put together. Though, I am not a fan of wide sashing.

I think you might want to trim them all down to the smallest size first, and then add equal borders to all of them to get to a larger size ;-)
If you add borders first and then square them I think it would be noticeable that they did not all start out at the same size.

If I do that then the points of the blocks will not match up on the outside square. Each square is a sampler block.

What I would do is measure the smallest square and the largest square. If the difference was for example 1 inch, I would put a 1 1/2" border just across one side and either the top or bottom then square up the blocks to all the same size. Do that the same on all the blocks. All tops or all bottom, all left side or all right size.
After that you could add any size sashing you want to between the blocks. The border on only two sides would look like it was planned that way.
You could also put the border around the whole block, trim to the same size and then sash.
I think the first option would be more like it was planned that way and not a mistake!

why not add sashings or strips around each square that will be background fabric. then when they are all trimmed and sewn together, they will look like they are floating.

I think the idea of adding sashing to square them up is great. I bet it will be a wonderful sampler quilt.
