Take your two fabrics right sides together. Use ironed flat coffee filters and sew to fabric. (leave a small opening for turning)
    Rough cut the circles
    Remove coffee filter
    Turn circle
    Continue with pattern.
If you wanted to add batting, just add it as a layer when you put your two fabrics together ie batting, fabric, fabric, coffee filter.
Sorry I don't have the link for the coffee filter idea.
Thanks for the reminder about the coffee filters. It makes it all the easier.

here's a tut on something similar, i didn't use purchased templates. I used a olfa circle cutter and made my square to fold by.

Excellent method beginning with this and all the responses to help understand the process. This may be the way to teach the ladies at church craft meetings to help make quilts for VA hospitals. Thank you, you all

    Batting is optional.
On Fons and Porter, they called it a Tortilla quilt. Nice colors.

Thanks for the great info and a reminder to try this again.
I’ve had fun with several of these circle quilts a few years ago. The Missouri Quilt Co video tute for their Circle Magic Ruler is excellent but wasn’t available when I did my quilts.

I used a thumb tack to make my circles – a nice size thumb tack found with my desk supplies. Scotch tape it (point up) to the bed of your machine. The distance from the needle is the radius of your circle. That way you can make any size circle you wish without all the tracing. Some newer sewing machines have a circle making part. Google “sewing machine attachments for sewing circles” to see several.
I cut fabric squares to work with and the construction is just like the Circle Magic Ruler tute ~ fabric right sides together; fold corners to crease a center mark, (make a template to do this also) sew and cut the circles after they are sewn.
Use a slit to turn the circles right-side-out and press. Top stitch outside edge of circle.
Lots of “circle” possibilities to have fun with.
