To answer your question. I am making due to the fact that he collects blue and white stoneware that is displayed in his living room. This is where the lap quilt will be used. I do not want to take away from the blue and white theme.

I think they are both pretty. it depends on the look you want to create. Sashing with either one can change the look.
I like the idea debd had about flipping the orientation differently. Then It would not look so one sided with #2.

I like layout #1. How about moving the right middle block (as you're looking at) down to the bottom, use white setting triangles and use either of the fan fabrics as the border, or do an alternating border using the fan fabrics.

I like #1. I wonder how it would look with 5 blocks instead of 6...although I know you worked hard on all 6. An odd number (5 or 7...)just appeals to me better.
