I read on this board recently (I think) that asking a quilter to do repairs was like asking Picasso to paint your garage. I've been caught once or twice so now say often enough that I dislike mending even for myself and that I'm a quilter. No time for mending.
On the charitable side is she lonely and using these mending jobs as a means of having your company.

Such good advice from everyone. Where was the Q-Board years ago when I was faced by so many of these situations! We of the sisterhood of quilters have this same problem worldwide. There will always be others that want what you have for free, no matter what it is that you have. They never seem to have anything to offer you, many times not even thanks. They don't even give you their precious time if you need an ear to talk to.

My friend aasked me to fix the hat she wore at her wedding. Her daughter was wearing the mother's wedding dress for a fashion show. She bought me a ticket for the supper and show, nice evening. Some people appreciate what we do!!!

They never asked me to mend again. Did ask me to make tablerunners and offered to pay me. Asked me to teach their child to sew on her new machine and gave me a matching machine after the first lesson. It all worked out. No hurt feelings and I do not mend for them. Hubby does their mending now.

Good responses. I agree that someone needing help with the littlest repairs is a great candidate for a beginner class. I've made the offer myself to teach a friend for free if she wants to bring over her project and do it with me the first time. I'm happy to share my time if someone really wants to learn. Usually, the person turns down the offer because they can't find the time. Then they start to appreciate how much time it takes me to do any sewing, even for my own family.
