We used to live in upstate New York, far, far from the "city". We lived in the Finger Lakes area in the middle of some of the most beautiful lakes you could find, with farm land, wineries, and in the country! As soon as you leave the state of New York, and mention that you are from NY people assume you mean the city and there is nothing else to the state but the city.

I used to think Florida was either white sandy beaches or everglades.
I didn't know that it snowed in Flagstaff, Arizona,
I was surprised that some of the deserts had vegetation. I thought they would be just sand dunes.
It's still a long ways across the middle of Texas.

I grew up in South Dakota, moved to southern California and moved back to South Dakota (temporarily). While living in southern California, I actually had people ask me why I didn't have a "southern" accent!!!!! I guess it's not a slam on South Dakota but more of an obvious lack of intelligence of the person that made the comment!!
