How many of you actually use a pattern?

I don't use patterns and hardly ever use the EQ7 except to scan the fabric and placement before I cut. Most quilts are made up of square, triangles and rectanges with borders. Even circle quilts are usually some form of a square before they are finished.

I start out with the pattern. Then I make changes to it. I almost always change the colors and sizes. I will probably change the border too. After I make the quilt by the pattern the first time all I need to do is look at the picture and I remember how to do it.

Being fairly new I start out with a pattern with all good intentions but inevitably screw it up early on. At that point I wing it and so far they've turned out well. I did one early on that went okay and I was pleasantly surprised when it looked just like the one in the magazine. Quilting is so forgiving!

When I first started to quilt I virtually inhaled quilt magazines and quilt books. It didn't take long until I was under water (glub, glub) and simply could not look through all of them to find a pattern I liked. So I went through my magazines one by one and tore out the pattern and directions for all that appealed to me -- all different kinds. Now when I am looking for ideas, I get into my box of patterns (and some of my books) and generally find something good right away. I may not follow the pattern exactly, but I usually use one as a jumping off point.

I bought Eq7 in hopes of creating my own patterns...should prove interesting! The only thing about a pattern I pay no mind to is the amount of fabric needed for the project. It's all poppycock and fibs and you generally need at least TWICE what they tell you that you need!! :)

I usually find something online or in a magazine that I like and then alter it to how I want it. I have only bought a pattern twice and one I never used, the other I modified it so much that it was not at all like the original. I usually graph it all out to make sure I am buying enough fabric since directions and measurements often aren't accurate.
