I understand picking cotton is very painful due to the thorns. Is this still true or is it now done by machine?

Your pictures brought back wonderful memories. As a child growing up in south Georgia, I'd visit my grandmother who grew cotton. Occasionally, she'd let me pick cotton. I probably got in the way of her cotton pickers; but she always paid me for the little bit I picked. My uncle owned a cotton gin. It was about a block from my house. I enjoyed going to visit him while he worked.

I picked cotton one summer,
earned enough for new shoes
and a bag.
When the bolls are dry they
cut your hands to ribbons.
