Isn't that why we always piece with neutral thread?

You are right about the back being clean and free of thread, I as taught that , also. Same with counted cross stitch and embroderiy.

I cut the threads. Why? I always did it that way? Actually, I guess I do it because it just looks neater.

My Bernina has auto cut, but I still clip any threads that I may have missed with the machine. I guess it is just old habits die hard, and I can't think about them being there hanging loose, whether they show or not.

That's what I thought you meant, and yes I clip those threads on the blocks, before I sandwich the quilt.

I don't always piece with a neutral thread ..... Recently I did something with black and white I found that black thread showed less against the white fabric than the white thread with the black fabric.

Frayed edges of the fabrics need to be trimmed off too. The quilt I trimmed tonight had black fabrics in it .... you bet I wanted those things trimmed to risk showing thru.

And one other thing to watch for are the clumps of threads that seem to gather together ... you wouldn't want those balls in your sandwich. Quite a lump!!

I think its a matter of preference. My old sewing teacher in jr high would of died of shame if even one of us did not cut our threads. I think it looks neater and I trim the seams if any is wider than it should be. I am 73 and still use techniques my teacher taught me. Ca. teachers rock.
