This thread is pretty old - I now have a longarm and so I no longer quilt in sections. However, when I did I used the various methods in the book Machine Quilting in Sections by Marti Michell. It is an excellent book that explains many different methods for breaking a quilt down into sections and then joining after quilting, and it explains when you would want to use each different method.
