How many of you actually use a pattern?

i used to follow a pattern all the time but have tried making my own on about 5 quilts , but if i see something i really like i will try to find the pattern , and sometimes i will tweek it a bit if i can

Following a pattern is a good way to learn and get familiar with the grid system. Once I started understanding that, it made it much easier to see something and know how it was most likely put together. I, for one, am grateful to all of the sites that put them up. Everyone assumes my granny taught me what I know, when the truth is, the interwebz and the teevee did that.

I follow a pattern sometimes, but not always. I really enjoy looking at pictures of quilts and figuring out how they were made--and then sew a similar one from "scratch." Of my last three quilts, one was from a pattern and two were my own design.
