The official explanation is: "Tole painting is the folk art of decorative painting on tin and wooden utensils, objects and furniture. The practice began in 18th century New England, and was also extensively carried on among German immigrants in Pennsylvania. A separate, related tradition occurs among Scandinavian countries and immigrants, including Norwegians, Danes and Swedes. It is more commonly known as Rosemalling. Simply put is a stylized primitive art. Can send you pics of some of the styles via e-mail..

Thank you.Ifind applique so fun!The freedom to create new designs is very freeing , and when you can add it to traditional pieces it seems to expand the whole.Would love to see some ofyour work. Like colors in a quilt, applique is a unique treasure from each quilter, I think. Finding them, wonderful!

Do you machine or hand applique?

I tried to machine applique something last week and there were to many small curves that I couuldn't do it so now I guess I will hand applique once I get the top together. The piece is already fused on the square it just needs to be secured.

I would really like to learn to applique and bought a couple books. I would love to figure it out on the machine or get really good by hand, guess we'll have to see how they turn out.

Your work is great!..Sorry for getting sidetracked :)

Sidetracked? That is part of the key to machine qpplique in my book! You want to make sure your applique is centered in your foot . Keep your eye on the fabric alignment and then you won't get sidetracked by the needle doing what it does. It knows "how" to go and we just tell it "where"! You need to figure which side gives you the best tracking.Using a stilleto to feed your applique toward the needle can give you a better sight line. It can be awkward , at best, doing many twists and turns with fingers in the way. Also remembering to stop and pivot with machine work is important too. I think it is why I prefer to do hand qpplique...that and it is relaxing , I think. You can use bamboo skewers for a stilletto as long as they have a sharp point. Orange sticks work also.

Sandra:
I've made 2 Dresden Plate quilts that are appliqued. They were my first and I've learned a little bit since I made them but I still love them. I don't do ANY HAND WORK...have arthritis and bad eyes so threading a needle and using my hands for fine sewing isn't what I do or want to do even if I didn't have arthur! I'll dig out a couple pictures and post them in the Pictures area of this board soon.

Happy quilting! Feathers

Would love to see them! I always liked the Dresden plate quilts. Have several pieces cut waiting for a plate of my own. Arthur plays havoc with a lot of us.That is why I sometimes use the stilletos. as long as it is comfy for you to hold them they can be great tools. Adapt, Improvise and Overcome! That's what I tell myself!

Sandra:
Here are my Dresden Plates. I love them but now that I'm a bit more experienced I know I'll do better applique in the future...we live, we practice and we learn.

Kathy, you private messaged me about the avatar under my name. It's a log cabin heart and I'm sending a picture so you can get a better look at it so the instructions I wrote out will make sense, maybe.

Thanks Sandra for the tips. I think I'll like hand applique myself as I do like cross stitch and embroidery plus I think it will be easier.
