One way to make it extremely light and yet stay extremely warm...
Use Insulbrite as the batting. It is machine washable and reflects body heat back to the person using it.

I agree with you completely about the weight of the quilt. I have had more than my share of surgeries,12, and at times couldn't stand anything touching me.
I haven't decided on the batting or backing at this point. I might use flannel for batting as it is light weight but warm too. I use that in rag quilts and love it. Right now I am on brain overload deciding which way to go with the front. LOL

[quote=QuiltnCowgirl]Here's links to some panel quilts I found using the search function (just put in the word 'panel') Hope these give you some ideas.

Thank you very much. I did do a search but didn't put in just "panel"

Very nice panels. Your friend will really love it when the lap quilt is complete!

Any left-over pictures you could use on the back.

I would frame the larger panel and use the 6" smallers as corners with the 2 remaining as centers in the pieced border (4-patch, 9-patch, etc.) I would use sashing around each of the pictures, with a corresponding sized border. The only thing is that you will really need to be good in your calculations to get them to come out.

I was thinking the same...or you could send them to me lol. (Love the panel - nice looking horses...can't always find that.)
