And yes, you can sell the original pattern, you cannot sell copies.

sometimes the copyright owner gives permission to sell up to 5- or 10 (some number) other times they say no-- you may not sell the item.
i just went through this with one of the quilts i made and was entering into the fair- contacted the copyright holder telling them about completing the quilt and my intensions- i received an email back from them telling me it would be ok to display the quilt (with the designer credited)but not ok for me to sell the quilt
you should always ask- make sure before trying to publicly sell another persons design- it can be a costly mistake.
But you should ask a copyright lawyer not the designer who is trying to pull a fast one by telling you there is a law that doesn't exist.

I actually sent an email to the designer of the Bow Tuck bags and she emailed me back and said that I could sell the bags as long as I made them on my home sewing machine - I could sell as many as I want- no licensing fee necessary.

This is my understanding as well, after having looked into the matter when wanting to sell some items I'd knitted. It seems to be a pretty gray area; it was hard to find any definitive answers. Pattern makers can say what they want on the packaging, that doesn't mean they're right regarding copyright law. I would say that it is a courtesy to ask for permission, but not necessarily legally required.

I have verbal permission to sell bags from a local designer as long as I email and let her know, and credit her with the design.

This seams to be a hot button topic, and differing replys, one reason I stopped all my magazine subscriptions.
