Wow....so much knowledge in one short thread. Hope to see what the answer is, so I can add it to my "library" of info in case I find one of these old girls.

This happened to me with my 1882 Davis LAVF so it was the very first thing to pop into my mind. I was a tad embarrased.

And, my bad, I am forever calling it a stitch regulator when it is actually the stitch length adjustment. Just something I'm fairly certain I will never overcome. But, I do know the difference. :-)

best,
d

Thank you all for your help! Deb was correct, ty for ur quick pm reply, I had the stitch length on 0. I posted a pic and it works great on heavy fabric but bunches up with the lightweight fabric. I'm thinking I need to replace the needle. That will be the next project locating needles that will work since the ones that go with this machine are obsolete, until then I will use heavyweight fabrics to improve sewing with a treadle machine.

Good work LauraJJ68. That's part of the appeal of these senior ladies- only so much can be wrong with them and most of us could fix whatever ails one.

We just had a very major party at our house yesterday. Most of 'the girls' were on display. There was an awful lot of ooohing and aaahing going on. Even an offer of another machine - once the current owner 'finds' it in her cellar. Curious what it is. She only knows it is a Singer and it was destined for the land fill. She couldn't let that happen -said someday I'll find someone that can take care of this.

best,
d
