Love the spiral as if we are going to be hurled off into the Universe.

June is flying by without a challenge theme, so I’d like to propose one. Hope I'm not stepping on any toes....

    June Theme: Independence Day

What does that phrase mean to you? Does it bring up thoughts of the Fourth of July? A birthday party for your country, whatever your country may be? Or maybe the day you got your driver’s license? Your first paycheck or the day you moved out of your parent’s house? Perhaps your eighteenth, or twenty-first, birthday? Could it be the day your divorce was final? Winning the lottery? Whatever springs to mind when you think of Independence Day, show us in a quilt.

Finished size and shape are your choice
Must be three layers connected by stitching; hand, machine or both
Must have finished edges; bound, zigzagged, piped, fused, any method to close the edge
May use alternative fibers (such as paper), but must follow the above guidelines
Should be new work made for this challenge

Use whatever techniques you want; new or old, conventional or off-the-wall. Try new ways to alter the texture of your fabric or the color. Maybe some surface design. Print with food or found objects, stamp with rubber stamps or erasers or wood blocks, embellish with beads or buttons or charms or paper clips, stitch with metallic threads or yarns or wire, the sky’s the limit. The greatest joy of art quilting is the simple fact that if you can dream it, you can do it.

If you get stuck on how to do something, what might work in a particular situation, which way to go…just ask. Sharing ideas and experiences is a big reason we’re all here. Stretch yourself; it’s called a challenge for that very reason. Most of all…have fun!

Post pictures along the way if you want, we'll gladly provide motivation and support. And be sure to post finished pictures and tell us the story behind your quilt and the techniques you used to create it.

Lots of possibilities here! The first thing that comes to mind is fireworks over NYC . Then I think about raising my 3 kids to be independent... how to do that in a quilt?...

Interesting challenge... don't know that I can find the time in June, but will be looking forward to July's theme.
