    As already posted, brass safety pins won't rust. Plated pins can rust when the plating erodes. It's usually not a problem unless a pinned quilt gets set aside and forgotten for a year or so and/or if moisture is present in the air (or the quilt gets damp).

    Use brass or all nickel pins... cheaper than buying a special tool.
