All of the fabric is cotton. The background, the backing and sashing are muslin. Normally all of the blocks would be sewn together making the complete top which is then layered to the batting and the backing. The whole quilt is then quilted and bound at the edges.

For QAYG, (Quilt As You Go) each block is layered separately:

quilted separately (nice to have it this small when doing by hand)

    blocks are joined:

Then all the blocks are joined with sashing:

The rows are then joined together, borders put on then bound and done!

If you are wondering about the pattern it is the famous Jane Stickle quilt made in 1863. Just google "Dear Jane" quilt. Many quilters have done it!
    Hope that answers your questions!

Only the quilting done by hand...... Wow wow the blocks are beautiful and so is the quilting!
I've been thinking of QAYG too with my Jane blocks. But I'm no handquilter, never done it. Maybe this is a good way to start? Small blocks, easy to handle - I guess.

Thank, Anael. The quilting as you see, is very simple. The blocks are small enough that just a line or two will do to hold the layers together. Do try it! You will enjoy it!

Oh just noticed you were speaking of QAYG - there is an excellent tutorial here on the board: http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...s-t115627.html
