I bought my first Kenmore in the 158. series brand new around 1982 (?). I have since bought several more, just because I love them! They are great, classic machines, and will last forever with a drop of oil in the bobbin area regularly. (Probably even without any care!) You got a great machine, which you'll realize once you get that thread tension issue resolved. Congratulations!

I was raised sewing on a Kenmore. Have tried other brands, but keep coming back to them. Easy to get parts and boy do they hold up to lots of work.

Provided the shuttle is properly engaged, the bobbin tension may be too tight. There's a tiny screw on the bobbin case, which you may need to turn just the tiniest bit.

I have a Sears Kenmore #158.19142, which is also a 'Sears Best' machine. I bought it, in either '77 or '78.

Your machine was made in 1972-1973. I have a 1972 Kenmore that looks identical (except mine is the upgraded model with cams). I wouldn't even want to guess how many hours I have used it (I made all my clothes for many years on that machine). It has never been serviced (except for cleaning and oiling by me), but still works great. It is truly a work-horse. I have newer machines, but I keep my old one for heavy-duty jobs...and it will be with me forever!

I have some Kenmores- a '76 wedding gift from my parents, my Mom's '74, and 3 others picked up for a church sewing group. Beginners love them as they aren't computerized which intimidates them.

I'm wondering if you have the bobbin going the correct direction inside the bobbin case. Here is a video that shows how to do it:

Also, are you sure you have the right size bobbin for the machine? Sometimes this problem is caused by using the wrong bobbin size, or a distorted bobbin.

I have one of the old 30 stitch kenmores . Never have had a problem so far , I have had it since 81 or so. Newest machine I have I use it all the time.

I DO have an accessory box with me, and I believe there is a "cam" thing. I do not understand this.

My daughter inherited the kenmore but my dad fixes everything so I'm no help but they are workhorses!!!
