I have been all over the net to get some ideas for this wedge shape placemat. No luck. I will just do a one fabric reversible mat. Maybe later try some appliqué. Thank you all for your suggestions.

I just checked my pattern, and that shape is not here, (bought it at St. vinnie's) but maybe you could find the same pattern on eBay? Pattern is McCalls 6622 from 1979, but it has the exact shape you want?

I also tried to search on Yahoo, and there is a question on yahoo answers for the same thing. The recommendation of the answer suggests using newspaper and cutting shapes until you get the shape you are after? Might be worth a try...

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I have the pattern. What I'am looking for are quilt pattern ideas that can be used for this shape. I know I can use almost anything, was just hoping someone could give me some good suggestions for quilt patterns. I did want to piece the mats.

I think Penny's suggestion sounds like what you had in mind. Pick a lovely block that you like, add borders to make it bigger than your shape, and then cut it down to shape. A 4-patch Posy in a fabric that reflects your DIL's color scheme would make a nice center design.

I have made many like this as our table is round and these fit nicer. My original pattern was cut from one of the patio placemats - kind of a rubbery feel that sticks and doesn't blow away so easily -. When I make these I use 1 layer of W&N batting and usually put 2 different fabrics on. One on the front and one on the back to coordinate with a tablerunner or mat (e.g. Halloween on one side/ fall leaves on the other). Usually cut my own bias binding unless I have a match I want to use. Have fun......I'm sure she'll enjoy whatever you make.

Forgot to ad that I do some kind of quilting on these before binding them.

I suggest you do as Pennyhal suggested but do it on freezer paper 1st and then cut you pattern to look like that, allowing for your seam allowance . Plus you can iron paper to material and cut.
