I've made a number of quilts for boys and I try to use a sports theme if they like sports. I made my son an Alabama Crimson Tide quilt and done several others using baseball or football fabrics. I am making one for my youngest nephew right now with guitar fabric as the central theme because my brother is in a band.

What does your grandson like, what hobbies does he have, or what sports does he play? You can find something that will be just right for him.

What are his likes and dislikes? Ask him what he would like unless it's a surprise.

Is there an animal that he really likes? My son requested a raccoon quilt at around that age. He loved it so much he took it to college with him last fall.

I have made a dinosaur, race car, Star Wars, Christmas quilts for my grandsons. It is funny camo was mentioned. I asked the oldest what he would like recently and he said camo. I told him I wouldn't make him one of those. Did I ever eat my words. I started one Sunday afternoon the 22nd and finished it the 24th, got it washed and laid out to dry. I tell you what, it would be a great thing to practice machine quilting on, just follow the trees and limbs. (guess you can tell it was hunting camo, not military camo.

I just made my grandson a new quilt because he is now 15 and the one I made when he was 6 is definitely too small although he still uses it. I used his school colors and the original Big Quilt (BQ) pattern. He was thrilled.

I did three different ones for my grandsons for Christmas. All different patterns with them and their interests in mind. Ohio Star (red and white) for the Ohio State fan, Pinwheels (named Hockey stars) for the hockey player and a mystery quilt called Forrest Stars for the outdoor boy.
