The only time I prewash is when a batik is stiff. I have also prewashed reds, navys and blacks but only in yardage.

With all the health issues going on, I'm prewashing everything that goes into my home. you don't know where everyone's hands have been and they touch all those fabrics and pass onto you. I also can't stand the smell of the fabric.

You can do it whichever way you want. I have pre-washed and not pre-washed and I've even mixed them in scrap quilts. So far so good. I'm sure there will be plenty of people come along and tell you lots of horror stories about not pre-washing. But it's still up to you which you want to do.

I quit pre-washing several years ago.

Thank you, everone. Like most techniques in quilting, it seems there are as many "right" ways as there are quilters. I love to hear all your reasoning for why what you do works for you.

We use cold water for all laundry. Prewashing won't shrink, but it will set colors. Drying is what will shrink stuff and I have never see that discussed.

I never pre-wash my cotton fabrics. Now that there are color catcher, that makes more time to quilt than wash !!

I only buy remnants and large yards of fabrics. I always pre wash. Doubt I would pre wash pre cut fabric pieces, if I were to buy them.

    As a general rule, I don't pre-wash.
