I have used thin poly batting, flannel and leftover warm & natural cotton batting in placemats. I would pre shrink the cotton batting by soaking in the sink because you don't wank crinkly placemats.

I use iron on fleece - stays in place and gives a nice finish to the placemats.

A lot of good suggestions. I'm making a set of placemats for my neighbor, just uses them as place settings, not actual use.

I shortened a set of drapes and made a valance with some of the leftover fabric. Just the perfect width to use for placemats was cut off so I shopped my stash for a matching color for the back. He has no idea I'm making them.

I've used thin poly batting with no problem. Mine have been washed many a time.
