This memory sounds like a combination of Mr. Skeffington and the storm scene in Stolen Life.

I've seen all the movies suggested none are the movie I am thinking about.

What style of dresses were they wearing, hairstyles? Do you remember what the man looked like?

I think you're right. It's Mr.Skeffington with Bette Davis and Claude Rains.

wish the new movies were as good as the oldies..between great acting and plot line....and no heavy breathing/ between the sheets are necessary...nor foul language....what a concept!

Bette Davis... when I was about 15, living in Westport Ct., I rode my bike down to the beach often. I was a loner kid, pretty much. On one ride, down at the beach, I was nearly hit by a big sedan car driven by... an aged Bette Davis! My Dad joked that I should have let her hit me and then sued. He was kidding, of course. Will never forget my close encounter with her. As an actress, she always kind of creeped me out. Her voice or something... The parts she played where she was crazy and deranged were so unsettling.

Are you thinking of "Mildred Pierce"? Sounds kind of like that plot.

Yes, that movie is Mr. Skeffington. Bette Davis played the wife 'Fanny'. Claude Rains was 'Mr. Skeffington' Another one of the great movies!
