I buy lots of 1/4 yard pieces, shops know me and know I buy lots of fabric, yardage as well as cuts. I have collections of different colors as well as groups...like the 30's...I bought over 90 different ones , so no way I needed 1/2 or a full yard pieces of them I bought all 1/4 yard pieces and no one complained. Same as a brown , grays and white on white collection, I needed lots of variations not lots of yardage...so be kind and patient and hope there is no one behind you that's in a hurry. I have let people go ahead of me when my cart is full, because my cuts would take a few minutes...Have fun

I like an online store called Shabby Fabrics. They have lovely fabrics in fat quarters and fat eights too. Patterns usually call for more fabric than what is necessary but you have to know what you are doing when getting less.

Most of the quilt shops I have been in are not upset about getting a quarter of a yard no matter how many you get

Tom, a lot of stores will sell 1/8 yds! They figure - it's still one cut whether its 3 yds or 1/8 yd. Doesn't work for on-line stores that I know of!

Cutting 1/4 yd or 4 yards is actually the same cut...the cutter just has a smaller pile of fabric. It's normal in fabric stores. If that's what you need, that's what you by.

Be a pain the butt.....these stores are glad for your business. Plus, you are not the first one ever to ask for 1/4 yards.

When I worked at the fabric store cutting 1/4 yards was no problem unless a customer came to the cutting table at 8:57 pm with two carts of calico fabric and wanted 1/4s and 1/8s. Fabric store employees are trained to give the customer what is wanted, so don't feel bad.

As I explain to customers who apologize for buying a small amount of many fabrics - that's my job! And it makes no difference if one person is buying 10 yards or a dozen folks are buying 1/4 yards. You are buying the fabric you want for your project - and I am (happily) selling it to you. If the cutter rolls her eyes or lets out a sigh, please mention it to the manager. There is no excuse for that.

I agree with Quiltingshorttimer - when I worked in a QS my favorite thing to do was to help someone pick out fabric!!! It is always fun to spend someone else's money!
