I lived in Portland for many, many years and you are getting some great advise! Any/all of these places are great. Fabric Depot is an absolute must..... huge with so much more than just quilting cotton. You will love it! I find the Japanese Gardens so peaceful and nice with a terrific view of downtown Portland. From the Zoo or Japanese Garden you can also easily go to the Washington Park Test Gardens although spring would be much better when the Roses are in bloom. Dinner cruises are on the Portland Spirit and leave from the waterfront park on the west side of the Willamette River. Everyone there is very friendly so feel free to ask anyone - they will do their best to help you out. Have fun!

In Portland, The Chart House Restaurant for lunch has a great view of Portland, even on a cloudy day.

Oh, I'm jealous, I really like Portland! I love Fabric Depot, you'll be happy you went!

I think almost everyplace cool that I know about in Portland has already been listed, except I don't see Voodoo Donuts on here yet. If you like donuts with crazy stuff like bacon or fruit loops on it, try Voodoo Donuts.

Oh, and Sock Dreams! They have so many cool and cozy socks there - great place to pick up some Christmas gifts.

I can see that none of you mentioned my favorite place to visit in Portland, Lloyd Center Mall. Huge, fabulous, and has an ice skating rink in the middle of it. I learned to ice skate there as a child. Christmas season turns it into a fairy land. (Since you are coming from California, wave hello as you pass the first Albany, Oregon exit! There are a few of us on here who live nearby.)

Be aware that there are a lot of protesters in Portland right now. Be careful wherever you go.

I'm headed to Portland Monday to spend thanksgiving with my DS And DDIL. My husband and daughter are also going. It will be my fourth trip since they moved there from Georgia. In addition to the other suggestions I love Papa Hayden's for fabulous desserts. The area it's in is fun to wander around. The Saturday market at the college is wonderful with so many local farmers and other vendors. Also, we love the Saturday market that's beside the river, too.
