I use Crayola Ultra clean markers. It washes out completely. For dark fabric I use light colored chalk sharpened to a point. Sometimes when the dark fabric turns to light in the block I mark with both the chalk and marker. I start marking in the middle out either diagonal or straight. I reverse and go the other way to make squares or diamonds. I do all my quilts in straight lines using a walking foot. I spray or glue baste and never have puckers. This book is the best I've found for straight line quilting designs. One Line at a Time by Charlotte Warr Andersen.

I love my metal right-angle square for keeping things true.

    FYI...the Item No. for the 36 x 2 1/2 inch ruler is
    Ref: CGR236.
