I think Herringbone pattern quilts love really neat and would be great for a male recipient.

Here's one I made for a man:It is an Eleanor Burns pattern, although there are similar ones available. I just like her directions. It went together quickly and is well loved.
Edited to add: The quilt in my avatar was also given to a man. That was a free pattern called, "Glass Bottom Boat."

Bargello. It doesn't seem like an obvious choice, but all of the men in my life have all loved the bargello quilts I've made the most.

I made one for my DH in black and purples (his favorite color) a couple years ago and he loves it and uses it daily. He loves it so much, he made a photo of that quilt into his Facebook avatar, LOL.

My FIL has asked for one, in browns. My nephew wants a "black and red" one but I think it's going to have to be red and greys/blacks or it'll end up too pink! LOL

I realize that we consider certain colors and themes manly (as with greeting cards -- brown and ducks for men), but I don't really get why we do this. Don't men enjoy colors and flowers just as women do? I haven't yet given a quilt to a male relative, but I know that when the time comes I will also feel constrained by this aesthetic idea of what is manly. I think I won't worry about color (other than pink) as much as avoiding florals.

I believe it's the fabric or colors used, not the pattern. One of my favorites for a grandson, was red and black "and no flowers" Grandma!! He loved it,
