I come from a generation that always ripped fabric because it will be on grain, then straightened it by pulling opposite corners (you need another pair of hands for this).

I cut. I do not like ripping as I have heard that it "hurts" the fabric as much as two inches in. I do not know if this is true, but I just like cutting. I also put my top on the backing to make sure it is large enough.

I just started ripping large pieces of muslin to use for backings. It appears to be straight. This is the only time and thing I rip.

I NEVER RIP. I do lay my top over the backing. I try to have at least 2 inches extended all around.

When working with the wide back stuff I always rip.
