Golden Thread makes a product called "Preview Paper." It's a roll of plastic with a black line printed on the long edge, that's just for that purpose. The price on it was $10. It is recommended that you put a strip of painter's tape along one short end, and write, "Draw on this side only," so the residue from the dry erase marker won't get on your quilt.

Having said that, the vinyl might be a less expensive way to go, and may be a little thicker. JoAnn's usually has a great selection of clear vinyl.

And take pictures of each design!! I do the same "auditioning" using Press & Seal plastic wrap. You can have diff patterns in diff places or just one and wipe off with crayola markers. Sure is a great idea!!

I, too, attended a workshop where the instructor had us bring our own sheet of plastic for FMQ drawings. I might have gotten mine at Michael’s or WalMart and I took painter’s blue tape and folded it around all four edges (like binding) in case there were sharp edges. I use it all the time but also to draw shapes for appliqué so I can decide where to fussy cut the fabric.

I like to use plexiglass sheets. 24x36 or so. They are big enough to get the idea of a design, and then I can set them against the wall for reference... I also take pictures with my phone... Sometimes I don't get to the quilting right away, and need to use the plexiglass for another quilt first. The painters' tape around the edges is a must. I write "Drawing side" on one side, so I don't accidentally put the side with dry erase dust onto my quilts.

Use a shiny clear shower curtain also! Much cheaper than the vinyl table toppers

That's a great idea; I need to get the dry erase markers; I have a quilt top I've had done for a while but no earthly idea how to quilt it; I don't think a panto would be appropriate. I'm nervous about trying custom quilting but need to jump into the deep end at some point. I'll give this idea a try til I find something I like.
