OH my goodness! Haven't seen CS in so long, except in antique stores on gingham aprons..... I did it many years ago, a few aprons and kitchen towels..,which by the way, I still have and use. I used a hoop, no stabilizer or backing fabric- I think the hoop was taut enough to keep fabric from puckering...I'm thinking there still must be some how to/pattern books on Amazon or even JAF....

With hand embroidery, sometimes a little drawing in of the fabric is inevitable. But if you quilt it thoughtfully and heavily enough it will quilt out. Go to this topic to see an example I posted several years ago of hand embroidered blocks before and after quilting.

When I did chicken scratch years ago I had the books on how to do it and I believe it was called Tenerife (spelling may be wrong) It was fun to do but when you buy the checked fabric make sure the squared are a perfect square cause that's not always the case .

Amazon showed a book - how to chicken scratch quilt blocks (?) by Rita Weiss, but unfortunately out of print and unavailable. Looked like that was where the block was from...on the front cover of book.......wonder if there might be another source for that book somewhere......

My aunt loved making chicken scratch pillows. When the fabric was stretched over the form it lays flat. Although, I would shrink the fabric first by washing and if it was going to be used as something that has no back to it, I would make sure to not pull on the threads too tightly.
Somewhere in my loose pattern pages I have a summer winter spring and fall apron pattern done with chicken scratch, torn from a magazine. Very fun to do.
