They are doing the same with candy bars, cookies and other foods. Making everything smaller and charging the same or sometimes more.

I guess they think we are too dumb to know what they are doing. I find generic foods have done that yet. So when I can those are what I buy. Name brands are usually higher because of the name. There are only so many manufacturers.

I just had to piece my backing. It was sold as 108, but was less. Then both ends were crooked, so I lost more straightening the piece.

Have you noticed that toilet paper seems to be narrower, too? Guess all fibers shrink nowadays!

I washed a Wilmington 108" wide back, and it shrunk to 100." It didn't shrink as much the other direction, only 2." One good result from it, is that it had a softer feel to it.

In the last few years I've notice backing material is lighter weight than 44" yardage. The weave is not as tight (causing shrinkage). The hand is different too. I just bought some Grunge 108 backing and noticed it was not the same weight as the 44" yardage. Have you noticed the quality of backings declining. Are there brands you would recommend that are consistent in quality with the bolt yardage?

    Thanks!

I have purchased a lot of backing from JoAnn's, particularly when I have a coupon. One backing I bought was supposed to be 108" wide, but turned out to be 118" wide, even after I washed it. I did NOT measure it before I washed it! Your quilt top determines how large your backing needs to be -- so I guess we'll all buy what we need to do the quilt!
