My DH has a leather pony. I could try it out if you like, but if it is an issue of needing help gripping, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. If you have the hand strength though, it seems like it would just be cumbersome.

I know you're not supposed to but I remove the templates from my hexagons before I start to sew them together in the flowers/rosettes. My fingers are short and my hands cramp if I try to hold on to a large hex. After I remove the paper/templates I spray starch and iron and I never have a problem with them coming undone plus it makes the GFG I'm working on much lighter to handle.

The leather pony seems like overkill to me. How about just using mini clips on the sides away from where you are stitching, or perhaps something a bit larger but still lightweight and maneuverable, such as a bulldog clip or a potato chip bag clip? The latter could be clamped behind the stitching area but pretty close to it. I may not be seeing this in my mind's eye quite the right way. You are gripping it firmly just to keep it properly lined up, correct?
