I would definitely not use flannel because of the flammability. Better safe than sorry. Additionally, the bowls often times don't keep their stiff shape after being washed, even though they have the all-cotton batting in them, like Wrap & Zap. If you did it with just flannel and cotton, I don't think you would be very happy with the shape after washing. Additionally, the whole point of these is to keep the heat from burning you. Only using flannel and cotton would be not be sufficient to do the trick.

Thanks, francie. My squares are 12". Would 2" be enough on those?

I love these but have never made them, just bought them at the local bazaar. Where can I find a good pattern/instructions for making them?

Thanks for the link. It answered my question about the dart size.

A friend of mine makes and sells these as sets (literally sells hundreds of them each year!). She has tried several options and sticks with the 2 sides of cotton and the ALL COTTON thin batting. This turns and topstitches the easiest. She does include a little card with them that says for 'reheating, should not be used for more than 4 minutes in microwave'. We actually use it for a bit longer, but this is a safety margin. My kids also love them for holding their ice cream bowls! REMINDER - make sure you are getting the all cotton batting (some say cotton and when you look closely it says 90% cotton), fabric and thread. Polyester does not do well in the microwave!!!

Cozies can be put in the microwave, for, at most, 2 minutes. If you need more time to microwave whatever it is you are microwaving, let it rest for about a minute with NO microwaving and then microwave - again, no longer than 2 minutes.
