After extensive trial and error, I do exactly what Osewfast does! I find this method produces very crisp applique edges and is the most fun for me
I have also found that with my Babylock Soprano, the Superior Threads Monopoly invisible thread works great. I had a lot of initial problems with the top tension, and stumbled upon using pre-wound Monopoly bobbins, too. Invisible thread in the top and bobbin does not work on a lot of machines, but now I just very slightly reduce the top tension and I am good to go!

I learned applique from Pat Campbell many years ago. My applique "floats" and no stitches are visible.

Thank you all for your input. I have so many colors in this quilt that I think it would be too time-consuming to change thread to match each color. That is why I was going to try the invisible thread, but I didn't like the way it puckered.
However, I have now decided to try the blind stitch, with neutral colored silk thread. I have never tried the blind stitch, but it can't be any worse than either the puckered invisible thread, or hand-appliqueing each piece.
Again, thanks for your ideas.
