I was in the Walmart in our town yesterday too and wanted to buy some of the plastic on a roll. I went and ask a clerk if I could get someone to help me and they said they paged someone. I stood there for 10-15 minutes waiting and finally left but as I am looking around I saw a lot of empty fabric shelves. I wonder if because of the pandemic that fabric is not being manufactured or if Walmart is slowly closing out their fabric area???

Walmart has done a lot of restructuring of their fabric departments in the last couple of years. In my local store it was taken out completely, then put back in.

A year (two now??) ago they purged a lot of stuff at $1/yard. Some of us here made some tremendous buys. Since then, while there is still some yardage most of the shelves have been replaced for hangers of various sizes of precuts, 1 and 3 yards mostly. I only picked up about 20 yards myself and have used all but two pieces, one of which will be the back on a future project and yes, (despite being in the fabric moratorium) I did add one large piece of striped yardage to the stash just because I liked it

I have always been happy to look at and use some Walmart fabrics. Some are "craft" level, some are "quilting" level, and you have to go bolt by bolt and feel by feel to decide which is which.

The Walmart's near me have all closed their fabric departments. I have not been into Walmart since the end of Jan 2020. I see the parking lot full all the time so my assumption is they are stocked with some things. I do miss the fabric department though.

Same where I live in Florida. Talked to a lady about 6 weeks ago that just transferred to Walmart close to me from another Walmart. She Indicated that they have been so busy ordering and stocking essentials that they haven’t ordered anything in fabric department. Went back in last weekend and there is a lot of new fabric. She said what little elastic they get goes immediately. Found elastic at Quiltedtwins.com.

Lots of small business here along with Walmart, Target, Hobby Lobby and Joanns in the same area. More small business have started since the building of the Target and Super Walmart. Very few small business had to close because of them, the ones that did, did not have online presence and the owners didn't want to go that route and sold or retired. Unless you are in business it's hard to understand the importance of online presence. Use to be Yellow Pages.
