Just because fabric comes from a quilt shop does not guarantee fantastic results just as buying from JoAnn's isn't doomed to disappoint. Take a look at the piece you want to buy, it's intended use and your pocketbook!
My experience exactly! some of the worst fraying I have seen was with fabric from a well known quilt shop.

Hello, Illinois from a New Mexican who grew up in the Fox Valley!
i just wanted to say that your comment pretty much sums up my experience and way of thinking. I find that I have the most fun when my projects are not limited by arbitrary rules. Rules like “always only use cotton for piecing,” “always press to the dark,” and ”the only fabrics worth sewing are X fabrics.” When I allow myself to have exceptions to these rules, I always discover something and sometimes I make something fabulous!

I buy a lot of flannel from Joann's and the newer and nicer "super" flannel works great. Never had a problem with pilling with pilling. I always wash flannel before using due to shrinkage and I use flannel of the back of bed quilts..
