First of all, I like the block pattern you chose. If the gold will be consistent in each block, I prefer the gold as its a solid and lets the blocks be the center of attention. You could use the red to bind it. Whatever you choose, your quilt will be cherished.

As it is a quilt of valor, I would use red (red, white & blue - patriotic colors).

I think the gold reads kind of flat all by itself, but I love what it adds when you combine it with the red. I also love that you're using something other than the standard red/white/blue for a QOV quilt!! And the blocks are really cool!
